Introduction: Rational Equations and Their Applications

In this lesson we will learn techniques for solving equations that contain rational expressions. There are many applications for rational equations, from figuring out how many drinks to bring to a party to how best to plan driving time for a road trip. We will explore some of these applications, including rates, proportion, and variation. In this lesson you will learn how to do the following:
  • Solve rational equations by clearing denominators
  • Identify extraneous solutions in a rational equation
  • Define and write a proportion
  • Solve proportional problems involving scale drawings
  • Define direct variation, and solve problems involving direct variation
  • Define inverse variation and solve problems involving inverse variation
  • Define joint variation and solve problems involving joint variation

The learning activities for this outcome include:

  • Read: Solve Rational Equations
  • Self-Check: Solve Rational Equations
  • Read: Proportions
  • Self-Check: Proportions
  • Read: Variation
  • Self-Check: Variation
  • Read: Applications with Rational Equations
  • Self-Check: Applications with Rational Equations
